BBL’s Melbourne Renegades to part ways with head coach David Saker

Melbourne Renegades have announced that they are letting their head coach, David Saker go despite having one more year on his contract after another season where the team finished seventh on the points table.

Saker was appointed for the 2024-2025 season for the Melbourne Renegades, his fourth since becoming head coach in 2021. But the franchise has been in poor form as they have finished seventh winning only two games in the last season. They have also sacked Captain Nic Maddinson seeking a fresh start with the departure of Saker.

The franchise has had a stroke of bad luck in the tournament since its inaugural season. They were coached in the first season by Andrew McDonald who left immediately after being appointed as Australia’s head coach and was later promoted to head coach in 2022.

Then Michael Klinger took over the vacant seat left by McDonald for the 2019-2020 season but he was also let go after the Renegades finished at the bottom for two seasons straight.

Then Saker was brought in by the franchise in search and hope for better results but the Renegades finished last third time in a row and they did bounce back in the 2022-2023 season finishing at third and winning seven games and hosting the knockout game where they lost to Brisbane Heat.

But the last season saw their downfall again. They won five continuous matches and only were able to win two matches in the last five.

They also suffered with their players being in and out with the axing of their captain, Aaron Finch being in and out of the team and eventually announcing an end to his BBL career. Shaun Marsh also had to pull out due to his injury after only playing five games and, also announcing his retirement.
