Matas Buzelis, a top prospect for the 2024 NBA draft, remains eager for a one-on-one showdown with ESPN’s projected No. 1 pick, Zaccharie Risacher. Matas Buzelis initially challenged Risacher during the NBA pre-draft process, but the matchup never materialized. Now, he’s waiting for Risacher to respond.
Matas Buzelis’ Versatility on Display
In a conversation with The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor, Matas Buzelis expressed his desire to compete against Risacher. “I didn’t really want to start something. The draft, everyone says, is wide open. I just wanted to create some tension,” Buzelis said. He believes their matchup would showcase the top wings in the draft class.
“I really believe that I can do everything on the court,” Matas Buzelis emphasized. “I bring defense, I can protect the rim, score on offense, post up, shoot threes. I just feel I have an advantage over him.”
During his rookie G League season, Matas Buzelis averaged 14.3 points on 44.5% shooting, and 27.3% from three, along with 6.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.9 steals, and 2.1 blocks in 32 minutes per game. Standing at 6’10” with a wingspan of 6’10” and weighing 205 lbs, his physical attributes set him apart from his peers.
NBA Comparisons and Inspirations
Buzelis sees several NBA stars in his game. “Franz Wagner, Andrei Kirilenko, Paul George, Tracy McGrady, Joe Johnson, Michael Beasley,” he listed. Specifically, he highlighted Wagner’s versatility and ability to bring the ball up the court. “Watching him brings more out of me, of what I could be in the NBA.”
While Buzelis models his practice routines after Paul George, his all-time favorite player is Kobe Bryant. “All of my workouts are based on PG’s game, but he is not the GOAT to me. My favorite player of all time is Kobe. Kobe is a GOAT.”
Despite being American, Buzelis has strong Lithuanian roots and will represent Lithuania in FIBA basketball. His passion for the game is deeply ingrained. “Honestly, I don’t even feel like I have a motivator. I just love basketball. I just love going out there and hooping. I’m not motivated by anything, and I feel like if you need motivation, it could be bad for you. That’s all it is—a love for the game. … I would play basketball for free,” Buzelis shared.
As the 2024 NBA Draft approaches, scheduled for June 26-27, Buzelis is expected to be a lottery pick, consistently ranking in the Top 5 in various mock drafts. He remains focused on proving his worth and making a significant impact in the NBA.
