Gautam Gambhir has been approached by BCCI to replace Rahul Dravid: reports

Reports are suggesting that former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has been approached by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to replace Rahul Dravid whose tenure as head coach of the team is about to end after the T20 World Cup 2024.

Gambhir is currently mentoring the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) current edition. Gambhir has also played for KKR for many years in the IPL and his side was the first to make it to the playoffs.

As for Rahul Dravid, he has been serving as head coach of the Indian Cricket Team since 2021, right after the 2021 T20 World Cup ended. He was set to leave earlier but the BCCI persuaded him to stay till the T20 World Cup 2024 concludes.

The BCCI has requested resumes to find a replacement for the seat of the head coach and the deadline for submitting resumes is May 27th just a few days before the T20 World Cup begins.

The deadline is also on the day after the IPL 2024 final. The new head coach will be appointed for a three-and-a-half-year term which will end in 2027.

As for the remaining coaching staff, they will be hired after consultation with the new head coach and all of the coaching staff is going to be the same for every format.

There is no argument that Gambhir was an excellent international player with loads of experience under his belt including winning the T20 World Cup in 2007 and scoring a magnificent 97 in the final of the 2011 World Cup against Sri Lanka while also contributing to the winning cause of the team.

But it should be noted that Gambhir has been serving as KKR’s mentor for a couple of seasons but has no experience coaching or mentoring at an international level.
